Protection and hygiene

Q: How can I protect myself and those around me from the disease?

A: Measures which can help prevent the spread of the virus are the same as for normal influenza:

Vaccination will also help to protect individuals and their surroundings.

Q: When should I use a face mask?

A: Healthcare personnel use face masks when they are in contact with patients who may have caught A(H1N1) flu. You can also use a face mask when you are in direct contact with someone who is ill. It is not necessary for healthy people to use a face mask in other situations, eg when travelling on public transport or in general contact with other people. Anyone who has been diagnosed with the flu should use a face mask in situations where they may come into close contact with several people, eg if you are in a room with other people outside your sickroom or you have to leave the house while you are sick.
